Jasper County CourthouseIn the heart of downtown Carthage sits this Romanesque Revival building built in 1894-5. It is constructed of Carthage stone and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its turrets, towers, and arches evoke a feel of a medieval castle looming over the city below. Inside a wrought-iron cage elevator still operates and an array of military artifacts and mining specimens are displayed along with the “”Forged in Fire”” mural by Lowell Davis that portrays the history of Jasper County. | Precious Moments ChapelCollectors will not want to miss the Precious Moments Chapel, the creation of artist Samuel J. Butcher. The Chapel has often been described as “America’s Sistine Chapel” as an artful representation of Michelangelo’s own Sistine Chapel in Rome. | Red Oak IILowell Davis' whimsical art work is the basis for this village. It has long been a popular destination for those who enjoy the eclectic art and architecture. The iconic water faucet fountain is a favorite along with the village church, nostalgic diner, Cackleberry Park and many buildings which have been transported and set up in this funky town. Please note winding road getting there is not suited for RVs, but better accessed as a day trip in another vehicle. |
