In the heart of downtown Carthage sits this Romanesque Revival building built in 1894-5. It is constructed of Carthage stone and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its turrets, towers, and arches evoke a feel of a medieval castle looming over the city below. Inside a wrought-iron cage elevator still operates and an array of military artifacts and mining specimens are displayed along with the “”Forged in Fire”” mural by Lowell Davis that portrays the history of Jasper County.

Lowell Davis' whimsical art work is the basis for this village. It has long been a popular destination for those who enjoy the eclectic art and architecture. The iconic water faucet fountain is a favorite along with the village church, nostalgic diner, Cackleberry Park and many buildings which have been transported and set up in this funky town. Please note winding road getting there is not suited for RVs, but better accessed as a day trip in another vehicle.

Since 1988, the Powers Museum has been serving Carthage and the region as a local history museum with annual rotating annual exhibits from the post-Civil War period to the 20th century. Traveling exhibits and special programs related to Missouri or Ozark regional themes are presented, too.

An amazing site for nature lovers, the Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center features hands-on environmental education programs and activities, walking trails and an amazing 1,300-gallon aquarium and Ozark stream is home to fascinating aquatic life. As one of the largest remaining chert glades in the world, this eco-friendly building and surrounding center should not be missed. There is NO cost to visit this beautiful facility.

Grand Falls

Grand Falls

Grand Falls, on Shoal Creek, is the largest continuously flowing natural waterfall in Missouri. It plunges 25 feet to a solid ledge before flowing southward. You can fish there also, along with a nice park system with trails you can walk or jog on just before you cross the bridge. Check out Trip Advisor for more information.
